/Mosezell Cannon, age 72, recently completed the three-week Ready to Work program at Shelton State Community College. Ms. Cannon is also a participant in the Senior Community Employment Service Program, coordinated locally by the Area Agency on Aging of West Alabama. She said at first, she was nervous about enrolling in Ready to Work but added that it is definitely worth giving it a try. Ms. Cannon found the program offered many strengths, as well as its own challenges.
For Ms. Cannon, Math was the most challenging part of the program, though she is no stranger to standing up to a challenge. For years, Ms. Cannon and her husband fostered 80 children, most with special needs and/or health problems, and adopted two special needs children.
Ms. Cannon said Ready to Work gave her a positive outlook and showed her things people can do even later in life. “It expands your mind. After a certain age you still have value in the workplace.” She explained. “It keeps your mind active, because if you don’t use it, you will lose it.”
